There is one more thing startups need to consider, "Hyper Growth" this is the #1 metric that investors look at, When they place valuations on companies. Now, the startup's first goal is to hit the slipstream that shows a high valuation. To achieve this, you should have a very high disruption factor. Now, Al, I have to ask you what happens if businesses do not have a disruptive factor. But the tech & what startups are selling is unique in the market? If the disruption factor is not high, your business needs improvisation to get above the noise in the market. I know it's challenging to get into the slipstream, and what I mean is the demand should be there, which is pulling you instead of pushing to gain demand in the first place. You should have the natural pull as leverage for whatever you sell in the market. No marketing magic can help you in the process; the focus should be on a unique combination of the market factors & market not being supplied with demand. Which pulls you and leads to the interested buyers, in other words, "Where Demand Resides." This is interesting now, Al. How do you get Type A people for your Unicorn? Firstly, hiring is hard. There's no debate, and it's the most challenging role to fill. But there is a way... If you are trying to attract Type A people, it's like a "MAGNET," which is polarized in the same fashion. Like one person is type A & the other person is type A guess what? In 2022, businesses need to have high disruption factors. For example, when I built Aptus ( Unicorn ), we got into the contract lifecycle management market; however, this market was not on trend. We need to know about it a little, but we had a disruption factor since Aptus was the first Unicorn in the business. Now, this is the point where we heard about the salesforce platform, and it was unbelievable tech. So, what advice do you have for startups with 3 or 4 sales reps? When startups try to sell their products or services, determining the disruption factor is a crucial step. Try to find a unique grasp of ideas by looking at the data collected and filling that underscore to get your selling done! You've to find the uniqueness in the market, that you're the only company to do the kind of selling. It would help if you found that unique solution that separates your business from others in the market. Al, I have another question for you, So if you have a unique way of approaching and trying to get into an executive or enterprise business. Consider selling makes it harder for them, especially if they're offering five features compared to 20 in the market. So, the answer is to find that "Unique Factor" which separates your business from competitors and articulate why it's a unique solution in the market. How's your unique solution different in the US tech market? If you can provide the disruption factor, it will accelerate your demand curve. If you think from an NLS perspective, the advantage is being the only one that offers a unique solution in the market. We talked about Aptus earlier and what makes them unique. Now we build a solution on the salesforce platform; however, your thinking should not stop there. And increase the ones that matter to get the growth potential they’re looking for. Even though these can be considered diametrically opposed. But the reality is that companies can't do one without the other both have to be considered. Optimizing your marketing machinery it's about taking that 10% that isn't performing well and getting rid of it. ...unless there's some extraordinary circumstance involved. And Why Should Startups Keep Optimizing Sales? Because companies should look at their capacity, specifically their sales capacity. It has to be balanced for startups to get the desired results. Not planning sales capacity and not having sales plans means no revenue for any tech startups. The other day I had a call with an AI company today doing Wall Street work. They predict earnings per share. But they have no salespeople… When I found out this AI startup didn’t have any sales representatives, I asked them: "Well, why don’t you fire one of your partners instead?" And they didn’t want to hear that. But the truth is that they’re not doing any revenue. Not having a plan for sales could mean a tech startup doesn’t know how to generate revenue. And the company can have a great solution for its target audience in place. But not having a compelling proposition or offering won’t help them generate sales and revenue. But How Can a Startup Unify Their Sales Machinery and Growth in an Apparently Non-Profitable Niche? In a sector where no one is spending money, or there aren't enough sales meetings, the sales machinery has to be well-oiled. If a spark plug isn’t working properly, all it takes is one spark plug for the whole thing to misfire. For the sales machinery, it all starts with having a product where there is demand. If a startup solves a problem that nobody cares about, then that's a fundamental problem. But having a product/solution that solves a critical business issue for an executive... That's a way in which startups can make sure they'll always have sales. Finally, optimizing sales in the so-called sales machinery isn't a science.
